In 1931, Sr. Faustina Kowalska (now St. Faustina) had a vision of Jesus in her convent. The medal features Jesus with one hand held aloft in blessing. The other hand points to his pierced heart, from which pour rays of light representing blood and water. Jesus describes the significance of this image as recorded in St. Faustina’s famous diary:
“I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise victory over [its] enemies already here on earth, especially at the hour of death. I Myself will defend it as My own glory. I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces to the fountain of mercy” (Divine Mercy in My Soul 47, 48).
